NETFLIX TO PRODUCE NINA SIMONE DOCUMENTARY

Netflix is jumping on the Nina Simone bandwagon.

The on-demand content streaming provider announced plans earlier today to produce a documentary on the singer titled “What Happened, Miss Simone,” and release it in the fall of 2015.

The documentary will reportedly incorporate unreleased audio recordings by Simone, spanning more than three decades, plus archival footage of some the singer’s rare performances, mostly shot throughout Europe and Africa.
The project will be helmed by Oscar-nominated director Liz Garbus, best known for her films “The Farm: Angola, USA,” “Bobby Fischer against the World” and “Love, Marilyn.”
If you all remember, Zoe Saldana wrapped up shooting on a film about Simone’s life last year, however it was not sanctioned by the family and has yet to be picked up for distribution.

Simone’s daughter is expected to take part in the docu-film and released her own statement today saying “’What Happened, Miss Simone,’ will tell my mother’s story in her own words via hours of unreleased recordings, excerpts from her diary and rare interviews. It will be the gift my mother’s fans have been waiting for.”
